Week 1: Overview of Illustration Basics

Part I: Review Questions

  1. What version of Illustrator are you using? — Illustrator 10
  2. Of the colours listed below:
    1. Which is most commonly used for printed work? — CMYK (Cyan Magenta Yellow Black)
    2. Which is most commonly used for web-related work? — RGB (Red Green Blue)
  3. Name two ways to change the view of your work. — You can click on the View option from the main menu and choose your preferred option (Zoom In, Zoom, Fit in Window, or Actual Size), or you can select the zoom tool from the toolbar and click directly on the drawing. Finally, you can use the shortcut keys: Ctrl + to zoom in, and Ctrl - to zoom out.
  4. How do you import/open a bitmap in Illustrator — You can either use the Open option from the File menu, which opens the graphic as a new file, or create a new document and select the Place option from the File menu, which gives you the added benefit of being able to position the graphic in the open drawing.
  5. How do you get the guidelines to appear? How would you use them? — To get the guidelines to appear, you first need to have the rulers visible. You place your mouse over the horizontal or vertical ruler, press the mouse button down, and drag the guidelines onto your drawing board. Guides help you monitor the height or width of objects, particularly in relationship to each other. They also help with alignment.
  6. What do you use to "nudge" your object? — You use your arrow keys to nudge or move an object by small increments.
  7. Name two ways to save your work in a raster (bitmap) format. — You can either use File > Export or File > Save for Web, depending on how you intend to use the graphic.
